74 Reasons to Get Excited for the 74th NBA Season: Reason 37

Reason 37: Dirk’s continued Dominance

Back in 1998, when a 20-year old power forward from Germany entered the NBA Draft, not many people knew, or even cared about him. When Dirk Nowitzki was taken ninth overall by the Milwaukee Bucks, then quickly traded to the Dallas Mavericks, only the Mavs fans cared to even research about the 7-footer. Well, as they say, times have changed. When Nowitzki was taken ninth overall, that was one of the highest positions a foreign player has ever gone, since not many general managers take risks on players overseas. Dirk’s mobility and shooting for his size is unprecedented. He is hands down the best shooting power forward to ever play the position. Nowitzki has led the Mavericks to 11 consecutive NBA Playoffs (2000–2011), including an NBA Finals appearance in 2006 and the franchise’s first NBA championship in 2011, making him one of only 5 players in NBA history to win a championship while being the only NBA All-Star on his team. He is a 10-time All-Star and 11-time member of the All-NBA Teams, and the 1st European-born player in NBA history to receive the NBA Most Valuable Player award. He is the first Maverick ever to be voted into an All-NBA Team and also holds several all-time Mavericks franchise records. So with all those credentials, Dirk doesn’t need to do anything else, right? Well 12 years after being drafted, Nowitzki continues to be the most dominant player in the Western Conference and the league. He is now looked at as more of a scorer than Kobe and Tim Duncan. All he wants to do though, is win another title. And the journey back begins game one.
