74 Reasons to Get Excited for the 74th NBA Season: Reason 49

Reason 49: Likelihood of a Dallas Mavericks repeat?

The Dallas Mavericks surpassed all odds in escaping out of the powerful Western Conference playoffs and defeating the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals in a matter of six games. Now that we’ve had a chance to let the reality of another team other than the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Boston Celtics or San Antonio Spurs win a NBA championship, the question now becomes whether the Mavs can put together another solid campaign in search of back-to-back titles. There’s no doubt the Mavs played extremely well last season, posting the third best record in the Western Conference at 57-25, but in all reality, the chances of another legitimate run might be more difficult than expected. The Mavs have a total of six unrestricted free agents whenever this offseason officially begins (J.J. Barea, Caron Butler, Brian Cardinal, Tyson Chandler, DeShawn Stevenson and Peje Stojakovic), and it’s unlikely they’ll be able to retain all or most of them. However, Dallas will bring back a main core of its roster in superstar Dirk Nowitzki, the aged-veteran Jason Kidd, the prolific scorer Jason Terry and Shawn Marion. And with the addition of Rudy Fernandez, the Mavs are looking at the now rather than the later. Many of these Mavericks have been in the League for quite some time – as nine players have over 10 years of NBA experience – but it was this same veteran roster that produced a NBA title in 2010. So while we wont necessarily pencil the Mavs back in the NBA Finals just yet, don’t be so quick to count out this veteran-savy team come 2012.
