Reason 70: Ricky Rubio’s long-awaited NBA debut
After being drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2009 NBA draft with the fifth overall pick, and spending the past couple of seasons overseas, Ricky Rubio is finally ready to make the anticipated transition to the NBA. Because of concerns with his buyout, Rubio returned to Spain to play the past two seasons. His last season’s numbers were anything but what we’ve seen in the past – 6.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game for Barcelona, while shooting just 39.2% inside the three point line. Despite his below average stats, the NBA has been waiting the arrival of the Spaniard point guard for quite some time. Now we’ll get the opportunity to see what the 6’4″ Rubio is all about. While Minnesota got rid of Jonny Flynn, the road has been all but paved for Rubio to step into the starting lineup immediately. He’ll also sell some more tickets for a team that has struggled mightily as of late. Many have labeled him as the next Pete Maravich or Steve Nash, as Rubio’s strength and preferred style of attack is setting up his teammates with some nifty passing. He’s bringing back the position of point guard and what it used to be in the past. Now we get to see if Rubio can be successful for Minnesota in 2011-12.
